Protein Synthesis is a Biology lesson that integrates a six page illustrated and interactive notebook with a five slide PowerPoint with original animated diagrams and answers. Teacher's Notes and a 'Quick Start Guide' are also included. Students construct their knowledge and understanding of the genetic code by engaging in a range of activities designed to support knowledge acquisition and to promote good thinking skills.

Lesson features include:

Thinking & Learning activities.

All new & original diagrams designed by 'The Natural Scientist'.

Keywords in context.

Animated PowerPoint slides that fully support each activity (with answers).

Link to short movie clip.

Self-test & answers.

Self-evaluation - 'How do I improve?'

Write about topic from different perspectives (completed in class or set as assignment).

Construct a 'Topic-Tree' (lesson activity, assignment or revision task).

Deep Think Biology

'Protein Synthesis' is the sixth in a series of 'Deep Think Biology' lessons on the Biology of DNA. If you enjoy this lesson please do preview my other lessons in this series. I offer all 8 lessons in a bundle at a substantial discount: $29.99, a saving of over $18 on the list price.

Teaching Philosophy

Presenting information to students is easy, facilitating the development of effective thinking skills is difficult. This ‘Protein Synthesis’ lesson, like other lessons in the 'Deep Think Biology' series, has been designed to help students acquire such skills whilst immersing them in the exciting science of Biology.

Importantly, Deep Think Biology lessons are designed to enhance your personal pedagogy, not replace it, whilst recognizing and encouraging our role as facilitators.

Interactive Notebook

  • Tasks associated with the ‘Thinking & Learning' section of the interactive notebook form the core of the lesson and are fully supported with PowerPoint slides, printable resources and answers. Students work sequentially through various activities that have been designed to help build confidence and knowledge of the topic; always encouraging students to think.

  • Students test their own knowledge by completing a topic focussed quiz.

  • Through ‘Self-Evaluation' students identify their topic strengths and weaknesses.

  • During class time, or alternatively set as an assignment, students write about this topic from different perspectives and reconstruct knowledge by building a ‘Topic-Tree’.

PowerPoint Slides

  • Animated diagrams included in PowerPoint slides correspond to those included in the interactive notebook.

  • Integration of PowerPoint slides with the Student Workbook support a combination of teaching styles: from independent work to teacher directed tasks to group and class discussions.

Teacher's Notes

  • Comprehensive explanatory notes covering each component of the lesson.

Included in this 'Protein Synthesis' lesson:

  • 6 page Interactive Notebook

  • 5 slide PowerPoint

  • 4 page Teacher's Notes

  • 'Quick Start' Guide

Synthesize information from a range of sources (e.g., texts, experiments, simulations) into a coherent understanding of a process, phenomenon, or concept, resolving conflicting information when possible.
Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address a question or solve a problem.
Analyze how the text structures information or ideas into categories or hierarchies, demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas.
Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 11–12 texts and topics.
Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but still accurate terms.
