Students consistently report that this fun, guided lesson/lecture helps to keep them engaged and active in the process of learning protein synthesis. The easily adaptable procedure allows for differentiation as well as higher learning for AP and college prep classes. It can be done continuously or broken down into parts, to meet the content placement of the particular teacher. As teachers observe students take part in the process of protein synthesis, the guided lesson also acts as a formative assessment.
Better Biology has implemented this lesson at the beginning of a unit, where students do not take notes, rather follow along and ask questions along the way. Alternatively, Implementation in parts, with notes for each section is also an option for this guided lesson/lecture or as a review prior to an assessment.
Depending on the size of the class and availability of materials, this lesson can be done individually or in groups of two. Amazon links are provided for the few necessary materials, although strips of cut white paper can easily replace the register tape.
A google doc link is also provided for teacher to copy so they may edit or customize.
