This activity can be used on conjunction with a unit on the Civil Rights Movement in Social Studies or English classes. Many students will already be exposed to Rosa Parks and the bus boycott before reaching Middle School, giving them the background knowledge they need to tackle this difficult text. Students will be asked to carefully read a New York Times Article (available from Teaching Tolerance at http://goo.gl/UJVZSx) reporting on the arrest of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. As they read, students will answer guiding questions about it. The questions are designed to slow students down and help them make sense of details in the text. Questions are based on context clues, text structure, inferencing, and comprehension.
