This role play has students imagine they are one of 5 roles: The king of Saxony, Archbishop of Mainz, Pope Leo X, a priest who has worked with Martin Luther, or a peasant who has worked with Martin Luther. As their role, they must decide between 4 consequences for Luther: excommunication, a deal to recant the 95 Theses, exile from Saxony, or a Counter-Reformation. Based on the differing motives and perspectives of their roles, they will each arrive at different conclusions. Then, they get into a group with people who are playing the other roles. All of them then take turns trying to convince Pope Leo X about what to do with Luther. While discussing, they take notes on what the people in their group think.
