99-slide PowerPoint with Notes for Teacher and Student
This PowerPoint and accompanying notes is for a typical high school Biology class. The Kingdom Protista is a hugely diverse group of eukaryotic organisms that includes the algae, the protozoans and the slime/water molds. These organisms have traditionally been referred to as “protists” and they play essential ecological roles in the biosphere. Protists produce much of the oxygen in the atmosphere, they are important in decomposition and the recycling of chemical elements, and they form the basis of many aquatic food chains. Simply put, life on Earth depends upon the protists!
This is one of the “must-teach” topics in a biology class. With the use of many photographs and engaging lab activities, my students respond favorably to this topic. If you have never taught a lesson using a PowerPoint presentation, you have to give it a try! My students always prefer this to a traditional lecture. The use of eye-catching photos and diagrams rarely fails to stimulate a lively class discussion.
This PowerPoint is called “The Kingdom Protista.” It consists of 99 slides that are colorful, informative and visually stimulating. Pictures and diagrams are included that will greatly enhance your instruction to your students. This product also includes a set of notes for the teacher (14 pages) and a set of notes in outline form for the student (19 pages). Graphics, diagrams, clip art, and photographs were chosen to capture the attention of the student as the lesson is being taught.
Note: There is enough content and material contained in this product to break it down into two separate units. I usually cover the algae as one unit and the protozoans as a separate unit, and I test each individually. It is possible to cover this material in one unit if the biology class contains advanced students. Also, please note that some of the diagrams used in the algae section are my own hand drawn diagrams. I find that diagrams of algae life cycles are often overly complicated and I have drawn my own diagrams of Spirogyra, Vaucheria and Laminaria to simplify this information for my students.

1. Introduction to Protists: What is a protist? Simple or complex? Classification of the protists. Three groups of Protists: Protozoa, Algae, Slime and Water Molds.
2. The Evolution of the Protists: How eukaryotic cells differ from prokaryotic cells, how eukaryotic cells evolved, theory of endosymbiosis, evidence in support of endosymbiosis.
3. The Algae: General characteristics, autotrophs, how they are classified, reasons why the algae are not placed in the plant kingdom.
4. Classification of the algae: Color, types of chlorophylls they contain, methods of food storage, cell wall composition.
5. Structure of the Algae: thallus, unicellular, colonial, filamentous, multicellular.
6. Reproduction in the Algae: Asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction, zoospores, conjugation, fragmentation, isogametes, heterogametes, alternation of generations.
7. The Green Algae: Characteristics of green algae, Spirogyra is used as an example of this group of algae, students will label the structures found in a filament of Spirogyra, pyrenoids, spiral shaped chloroplast, fragmentation. Students will label the steps in a drawing showing conjugation in Spirogyra.
8. The Yellow-Green Algae: Characteristics of yellow-green algae, Vaucheria is used as an example of this group of algae, students will label the structures found in a filament of Vaucheria, conjugation of heterogametes, oogonium, antheridium.
9. The Brown Algae (Example: Laminaria): Characteristics of the brown algae, holdfast, stipe, blade, life cycle of Laminaria, alternation of generations, gametophyte generation, sporophyte generation.
10. Diatoms: Basic characteristics covered.
11. Dinoflagellates: Basic characteristics.
12. The Euglena: Definition of euglenoid, mixotrophs, students will label the structures found in Euglena, animal like characteristics of Euglena, plant like characteristics of Euglena, eyespot, pellicle, contractile vacuole, binary fission.
13. The Protozoans: General characteristics, zooplankton, diseases, classification of protozoans based on their method of movement.
14. The Sarcodines: Amoeba characteristics, pseudopodia, contractile vacuole, methods of food getting, reproduction in amoeba, diseases caused by Sarcodines.
15. The Ciliates (Example: Paramecium): Characteristics of ciliates, cilia, students will label structures found in paramecium, macronucleus, micronucleus, pellicle, food getting, anal pore, trichocysts, methods of asexual and sexual reproduction in paramecium.
16. The Flagellates: Characteristics of flagellates, flagella, trypanosomes, African sleeping sickness.
17. The Sporozoans: Characteristics of Sporozoans, life cycle of plasmodium, the malarial parasite.

This PowerPoint was written with a typical biology I class in mind. It can easily be edited to meet your needs.
It usually takes me over a week to cover all of the slides on the PowerPoint due to the fact that this topic generates lively class discussion.
I have included a set of notes to accompany this PowerPoint. It includes a complete set of notes for the teacher, and an outline of the notes for the students. Students will use the outline as the PowerPoint is being presented and they will fill in the notes as the lesson is being taught.
