Prove it! Show me the evidence! Do you find yourself repeating these words on a daily basis? Like you, my goal is for my students to move beyond a literal understanding and to a deeper and more critical evaluation of the text. I am constantly asking my students to go BACK to the text to support their answers with EVIDENCE.
In my own classroom I typically use these passages during my guided reading instruction. I have also used them as a quick assessment or for test prep. During the first reading, I have my students number the paragraphs or subheadings (If the passage includes paragraphs or subheadings.) During the second reading my students take notes directly on the text. They make inferences, draw conclusions, circle vocabulary, etc. As my students complete the comprehension activities, I ALWAYS require them to underline, circle, or highlight the evidence in the text. In many of the passages, the students do not have to write the correct answer but have to use the color code to underline the answer in the text.
*There are various levels within each unit. I originally began creating these passages for my first and second grade multi-age classroom. I needed something to meet multiple levels and needs. You probably won’t want to use every passage for every student. The passages do get more difficult as the months progress.
