Description

This set of task cards provides practice identifying and understanding the meanings of proverbs or adages. The proverbs, or adages, are presented in sentences or paragraphs to provide context.

NOTE: For a digital version with one task card per slide, and ready for students use with text boxes, etc for their answers on Google slides, see Proverbs and Adages Task Cards Digital Resource. This PDF version is also included with the digital resource.

With these cards, students work with proverbs, or adages, to complete the following activities:

Fill in the missing word

Draw the literal meaning

Identify and define the proverb

Proverbs in fables

Proverbs as metaphors

Match proverbs to their meanings

Write the fable

Understand the concept of “proverb or adage”

These task cards are designed specifically for middle school and upper elementary kids. The cards are large – two cards per page and have more content per card than many of the smaller task cards – perfect for older kids who can handle more than one quick question per card.

Task cards are great for individual or group work, review activities, class games like Scoot or Footloose, or quick assessments. Included with this set is a list of suggestions for ways to use task cards and a list of suggestions for easy differentiation with task cards.

Also included is a copy of three Aesop's fables for use with the "proverbs in fables" cards. And, as an easy reference for teachers, there is a list of proverbs,or adages, with their meanings.

A blank answer sheet for students to fill in their answers is also included.

Teaching kids to understand proverbs and adages supports several Reading standards especially the Reading: Literature standards that involve making inferences.
