Description

My students often request more speaking practice. We play a lot of games that require them to speak, but the speech is often scripted or so defined it’s hard to be considered spontaneous or natural. This game is one of several that we enjoy playing that allows students to speak for a longer period of time with few restrictions and no scripts. A digital version of this game is also available.

Goal: Be the first player to reach finish. Players advance by reading a proverb and explaining, in their own words, what the proverb means/teaches. The game includes 40 different proverbs cards, so there is no fear of students having to repeat a previous student's answer.

Materials Needed & Not Included:

  1. Dice– one die per group of students
  2. Player Pieces– one per player, popular options in my class include plastic counter circles, mini erasers, and milk jug lids.

Preparation:

Print the game board and cards. You will need one set for each group of students. I highly recommend laminating them for durability (cold lamination is great because it is thicker and doesn’t peel when cut through). I also recommend printing each set on a different color cardstock so when you find a lost card on the floor at the end of the day you know which set it belongs to.

Directions for Play:

  1. Pass out a game set (1 board & card set, 1 number cube, enough place markers for all students in group) to each group of students.
  2. The first person takes a card and reads the proverb. He/she explains the proverb in his/her own words. For more advanced students I give them a minimum length of time they must speak, up to 30 seconds for my most advanced classes.
  3. If able to explain the proverb (and speak for the required length of time), the student rolls the number cube and advances on the board. If not successful, the student leaves his/her playing piece in place.
  4. The first player to reach finish is the winner.
