This is a lab where we go into the "wild" and observe hand washing behavior.
We did not operationally define hand washing but this might be a good project to learn about operational definitions on.
Instructions from the lab.
We will attempt to observe sex differences in hand washing behavior in our population. Report to the restroom and DISCRETELY observe hand washing behavior (we will be using naturalistic observation). Record the hand washing and non-hand washing of the subjects. We will collect data and graph the data. It is imperative that you be surreptitious and discrete, we don’t want to change behavior with our observations…or discussion of this project. Use the data table below to collect your data. You will see in the sample that the researcher observed 6 non-wash situations and 3 wash situations.
Caution: Under no circumstances are you to video/photograph or otherwise record your subjects. You also may not reveal the hand washing behavior of any individual by name to anyone.
The first time I did this lab (8/2014) I gave the students class time to observe hand washing between classes but this did not work out well. We had too many people in some restrooms and our campus security did not like my students wandering around after the bell.
My students get a huge kick out of this lab and have reported some great hand washing behaviors.
3/13/17 Revised lab for simpler data collection and included a link for a Chi-Square analysis. I also deleted all the old versions so if you already bought, look at this and see if you like it better before you delete the old files.
