The class begins this lesson by reading several paragraphs about public assistance programs, which are arranged into the following sections:
• Origins of Public Assistance
• Public Assistance Programs Today
• Criticism of Public Assistance
After reading about the many ways government helps needy people in the United States, and how these programs have become controversial, class members are asked to write an essay of 200 or more words expressing their feelings on the issue. Students should make specific references to information in the reading, as well as include their own opinions and ideas.
