I'm going to go out on a limb with a big statement: this project was the most fun my class had all year. (This isn't always true with public speaking!)

Almost everyone has to give a speech in his or her lifetime. In this fun project, students prepare and present SHORT mini-speeches from real-world scenarios, based on the “15 Minutes of Fame” that students will hear about or personally experience in life.

How it Works:

• First, students are introduced to the project and randomly draw one of 40 scenarios to present, ranging from Best Man toasts to Grammy acceptance speeches to the announcement that you’re running for President.

• Next, students do light background research and complete graphic organizers analyzing the purpose, audience, and characteristics of their speech types; a brainstorming graphic organizer also helps students craft speech drafts that authentically mimic the real thing.

• Students can then move on to write their own mini-speech that lasts for 30 seconds to 1min 30 seconds.

• On presentation day, students take turns playing the “game”. Each presenter gives his or her speech, and the rest of the class has to GUESS what kind of speech it is so they can decide how effective it was. The fast pace and laughter during the presentations keeps the pressure down, so students focus on the game, and not their stage fright!

(Psst... Since it's an editable file, you can make it easier or harder for your students! For example, older students might like to do this as total improv!)

This activity is a bonding experience for the group and a confidence-builder for individuals, including my shy ones. (Don't believe me? Read some of the comments from other teachers below!)
