Whether you’re a graduate of my "15 Minutes of Fame" public speaking project or just want a different, engaging way to assess speaking on a whole new level, take students’ natural storytelling abilities and polish it into informal stand-up routines!

First, students watch a segment of 1-3 hyperlinked comedy routines and take notes on how speakers engage the audience in both content and speaking skills. Next, they get a mini-lesson on how to tell a good story, choosing a moment from their lives to dramatize into storytelling. (Optional: Read over the hyperlinked article as a class to see an external source describe the qualities of good comedy!)

Not only do students write out a memoir-style narrative of an event from their past, but they are required to PLAN their speaking into the draft by marking where they intend to pause, breath, look up, move, etc.

On the presentation days, speakers tell their stories using either their memorized story or minimal notes to appear authentic; audience members take notes to demonstrate listening skills an generate peer feedback.

This editable, 5-page download includes:

• Video watching activity

• Mini-lesson and directions sheet

• Brainstorming sheet to choose and plan the story

• Common Core-aligned rubric

• Note-taking sheet for audience members

CCSS standards included: SL.2, SL.4, SL.6, and W.4. (Additional writing standards, including grammar, could easily be added if you so choose.)
