Public Speaking Lesson Plans for Middle School Students contains 14 one-hour lessons on public speaking appropriate for students ages 10-14. The lessons are designed to be flexible, whether they are to be used with a large English class or a small homeschool group.
Most lessons are broken into two sections, which can be separated into half-hour lessons or rearranged on different days to better accommodate the number of speech days needed for the class size. For a class of 10 or fewer, this material would take approximately 14 hours to cover. For a larger class, the necessary addition of time for speeches would add up to three more hours.
Each topic contains:
-- A 2-3 page lesson plan, and
-- A one-page handout of notes that could be copied and provided to students.
Some lesson plans also contain:
-- Additional pages with examples and activities,
-- Grading rubrics for each of the three assigned speeches, and
-- A simple peer review form that could be provided to students.
Lesson plans have several special features…
-- Color-coding – questions for students are in blue and activities are in orange.
-- Notes to teacher: explaining in more detail or giving additional options or examples.
-- Suggestions for visual aids.
-- Review of the previous lesson with questions or brief activities.
-- Preview of the current lesson.
-- Impromptu speech topics for each class without a speech assigned. These are designed to be simple, non-graded “warm-up” activities.
-- “If time…” sections with additional activities (sometimes suggesting free online videoclips), which could be used to employ additional time or worked into the lesson.
