The spirit of the Caribbean comes alive! 'Destination: Caribbean' is a seven-part essay series paired with a short documentary movie of the same name. Both are dedicated to using music as a means of understanding the past.
Part Four is a 800-word snapshot of contemporary Puerto Rican life, ranging in scope from the mountainous interior regions to the thumping nightclubs of the capital, San Juan. The first section presents students with a list of twelve terms from the text, which then must be matched with the correct definition or descriptive phrase. It is hoped that by completing these questions and the 'Which One Doesn't Belong?" exercise that follows, students will improve their analytical skills, as well as their understanding of Puerto Rico and its music.
The essay series is an accompaniment to the short documentary movie 'Destination: Caribbean.' It can also be used standalone and included into a wide variety of curricula. Featuring topics that range from dance to history to the economic realities of being a Caribbean musician, each reading comes with a set of worksheets, activities and quizzes.
