Product Description
This activity provides a self-contained introduction to pulleys. No lecture should be given beforehand. This activity allows students to discover for themselves how pulleys work and how the related vocabulary applies to the concepts. Concepts include: actual mechanical advantage (AMA); ideal mechanical advantage (IMA); efficiency; and more. The guided inquiry model works by asking a series of simple questions and then later some questions inviting larger reflection on those answers with an eye toward synthesizing new information about larger ideas. It is meant to be done in groups of 2-3 over a period of about 30-45 minutes. It is best used to introduce the topic of pulleys, as it is a self-contained activity. No prior lecture should be given, but a student-share-out and review discussion would be idea. Two pulley wheels, string, and a 100g weight are needed to do this activity
