After reading There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly by Simms Taback, have your students sequence the story events and practice retelling the story using their completed activity.
This activity has been differentiated four different ways to meet the needs of the learners.
*Version One: Pictures Only
-Colored pictures of the the following objects: vines, flower, pumpkin seeds, sprout, orange pumpkin, and green pumpkin
*Version Two: Colored Pictures Labeled
-Colored pictures with the word typed underneath the picture of the the following objects: vines, flower, pumpkin seeds, sprout, orange pumpkin, and green pumpkin
*Version Three: Colored Pictures with Beginning Sounds Missing for Each Picture
*Version Four: Colored Pictures with Writing Line Below
-Students use temporary spelling to write the name of each picture
*There are also two different cards that can be used to glue on the sentence strip. Both cards show a picture of the book. One card has a spot for the student's name. The other card has a spot for the student's name and is labeled "Sequencing and Retelling".
1. Cut out the cards and glue them on a sentence strip in sequential order of when the objects appear in the text. The card with the picture of the book should be the first card glued to the sentence strip.
3. With a partner or in a small group, practice retelling the story using the picture clues on the sentence strip.
*Video tape the students retelling the story to upload to your classroom webpage, student e-portfolios, or to share and revisit the comprehension strategy with the class.
