What educators are saying
This was a huge hit with my class. They really loved being able to do all the activities and it made out Halloween celebration so much fun. Thank you!
My students loved having pumpkin day and learning all about pumpkins! This allowed students that don't celebrate halloween to participate in all of our activities.
Description
This is a 105-page unit of hands-on, pumpkin themed math, ELA, and science activities is perfect for K-2 students. It will give you all the activities and resources you need to set up a successful Pumpkin Day in your classroom. 11 activities are included, plus parent letters for volunteering and donations.
Pumpkin Day includes engaging, hands-on centers that last an entire day. I organize Pumpkin Day during the week of Halloween in order to keep students involved and excited, while still focusing on curriculum. I tie these activities into our various units in October that are based around autumn.
The following math activities are included:
Pumpkin Weigh Station (Science Integration) – Students weigh a mini pumpkin on a scale and fill the other side of the scale with various manipulatives. Students also test their pumpkin in a bowl of water to see if it sinks or floats.
True or False – Students sort the addition sentence pumpkins into two columns, true and false. They record their answers on a recording sheet.
Pumpkin Tens – Students find the cards that match to make a set of 3 – a number card, a ten frame card, and a base ten block card. They record their answers on a recording sheet.
Seed Skip Count – Students place pumpkin seeds on the pumpkin mats in groups of ten. They can use the pumpkin seed number cards to order numbers by skip counting and then completing their recording sheets. Skip counting cards for counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s are provided.
Pumpkin Taste Test – Students test pumpkin flavored treats. They travel from treat to treat as they record their opinions. They then color or use check marks to graph their opinions.
The following ELA activities are included:
Vocabulary from the Vine – Pumpkin vocabulary cards are included to be added to a word wall and used while students write. Students put these vocabulary cards in ABC order and record their answers on a recording sheet.
Life Cycle of a Pumpkin (Science Integration)– Students look at pictures of the stages of the pumpkin life cycle. They order the pictures and label the life cycle handout. Students write and illustrate each stage of the life cycle.
Sequence the Story – Students choose a pumpkin-themed book. They read the book and sequence the events on their handout (5 different options are included).
Planting My Pumpkin Seed (Science Integration) – Students plant a pumpkin seed in a small cup of dirt. They complete one day of their Pumpkin Plant Journal each day for 10 days in order to chart the growth of the pumpkin plant.
The Pumpkin Disguise (Art Integration)– Students decorate mini pumpkins like a character (a pumpkin is also included as a handout in case you do not have access to mini pumpkins for each student). Students write about their disguised pumpkin on the handouts provided (4 options are included).
Pumpkin Playdough (Science Integration) – Students record a list of ingredients and check them off as they add them together. After the mixture becomes dough, students will complete a “how-to” writing prompt to describe how to make pumpkin playdough. Bag toppers for the playdough are included (6 color options & 3 B&W options).
