This project is one that your students will remember and yes have fun with! Great fall project where students will work in groups to complete an afternoon of Pumpkin activities to make predictions about their pumpkin which will include how much it weighs, it's circumference and how many seeds it has inside. The students will record their observations weekly as each group will label their pumpkin and observe them over the next 4 weeks observing as their pumpkin decomposes. Many essential questions addressed such as: What is decomposition? What is a decomposer? Does climate affect how fast something decomposes? Many other questions included in the essential questions addressed listed with the project.

Use parent volunteers and have a fall festival of carving the pumpkins. Hands on activities, measurement in both metric and customary units, data collection and analysis weekly with student reflection opportunities to facilitate class discussions about decomposition and the benefits of soil enrichment from decomposed material.
