Pumpkin Addition and Subtraction: Sometimes students just need basic fact practice. I like to use these activities to strengthen students’ fluency with facts and fact families. They can be used as an independent center, or as a small group activity with teacher guidance. Each activity has an addition and a subtraction component. You can use them separately, or mix them up for an added challenge. The same recording sheet can be used for all the activities. Cards can also be placed around the room for students to solve as they visit each card. Students can also play as a whole class, with half the class solving a problem and the other half holding the answer card. Students must look for their match and partner up. My class enjoys trying to beat their time from the previous round!
There are 3 activities in this set. Each can be used in different ways (see above):
Missing Number Addition and Subtraction: 12 cards each (+ and -) with a missing number. Students match the fact strip with the pumpkin that has the right number to make the sentence true.
Pumpkin Number Fact Families: Each card has a missing number in the fact family. Students must find the missing number and then write the 4 number sentences that make up that fact family.
Pumpkin Tops and Bottoms: This activity can be used 2 ways: (1) students solve the problem (+ or -) and find the pumpkin cart that has the correct answer (some problems have the same answer); or (2) using the separate recording sheets, students solve each pumpkin fact and then find another fact with the same answer on the recording sheet. They record the matching card letter (A – L) on the sheet.
