This is one of my favorite activities to have during the year. This is
a welcome activity if your school does not allow
Halloween or Thanksgiving activities or fall parties. It is designed around math and observation skills. My students love it every year.
15 pages included in this activity. Includes posters with directions for students as they do the activities, and pages to make a recording book for students to have as a memento from pumpkin math.
-estimating and counting the vertical lines on a pumpkin
-estimating and measuring the circumference
-estimating number of seeds (and counting if you choose)
-estimating and weighing the pumpkin (2 different ways- with a balance using small pumpkins, or a scale using large pumpkin; you choose)
-adding/subtracting with ten frames and pumpkin counters
-comparing an apple and a pumpkin using a venn diagram
**Extra materials needed to do Pumpkin Math- not included**
To complete Pumpkin math in one day you will need:
2 or 3 small pumpkins (miniature) or 1 bigger pumpkin
for weighing activity
balance scale and cubes (or personal scale) Pick your option
4 medium to large pumpkins
inchworms, paperclips (non standard) or ruler
Another option is to do one pumpkin math activity each day
with the class, thereby only needing one pumpkin. It can be a fun
introductory activity each day.
