Estimate weight and number of seeds
Accurately measure height and weight
Calculate pi (circumference/diameter). This calculation is very close to 3.14 because the pumpkin has a circular/spherical shape. Amazing!
Dialog can consist of questions: e.g. do the number of seeds correlate to the number of lines, weight, height, size, etc. of the pumpkin?
I have used this activity with my middle school students for several years with great success. Many of my students have never seen, or touched the inside of a pumpkin; so, this adds another layer of depth to this kinesthetic activity.
Be prepared with:
1 pumpkin for each group (I use groups of 4-6 students) [pre cut opening at top]
paper plates and forks for sorting and counting seeds
measuring tape and scale to weigh pumpkins/seeds
At the end of each class, I have a drawing to see which students get to take the pumpkins home to create their own jack-o-lantern. This activity is fun, hands-on and full of learning opportunities. Enjoy!
