This is a great math/science activity for the fall. Students will measure pumpkins to find the circumference, stem length, height, and weight. Then, students will count the seeds, and graph the circumference and seed count to compare the amount of seeds to the circumference of the pumpkin. Is there a correlation???
Each student or pair of students will need the following items:
a small pumpkin
a magnifying glass
The teacher will need a knife for cutting pumpkins to remove the seeds.
This is a messy activity, but the kids love it and get a lot out of it. I found that it worked best with a parent volunteer or two, although it is possible without.
