This is a fun challenge that allows for a realistic and functional business scenario to strengthen functional calculations that involve charts and tables, strategizing, multiplying, and adding with decimals and money. It can be used for a fall themed math unit, a Halloween activity, or a Thanksgiving activity. This math challenge should take one period to complete (roughly 30-40 minutes). Students can be grouped into small teams, or the work can be done individually. Present page 2 & 3 to the classroom and explain the math problem. The team or individual who calculates the correct answer first (or the closest to the answer) wins the challenge. Depending on the ability levels of the students, you may want to calculate one of the pumpkins as an example. You may want to allow the use of calculators. You also may want to explain rounding calculated prices to the hundredth place for a more accurate total.
