This lesson includes an original poem set to rhythm, the sheet music for the poem, and a copy of the pumpkin rhythm cards for quarter note, eighth notes, and quarter rest. This lesson provides your students an opportunity to begin composing at its most basic, composing/organizing rhythms. The lesson is geared for cooperative learning groups, specifically partner work, ensuring student success. This is a tried and true lesson that my first grade students enjoy every year! Also integrated into this lesson is understanding of beat vs. rhythm, music literacy and fluency, and the rondo form. The end product can also be turned into a game by seating students in a circle, passing an item to the steady beat of the poem, and the student at the end of the poem who has the item reads their pumpkin rhythm!
