Pumpkin, Pumpkin, What Do You See?
A 16-page story with a Halloween twist on the popular, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?"
Story: Read the story aloud individually, as a small group, or as a large group. Story can be printed (and sent home if desired) or projected onto a wall/board (interactive white board, etc). Ask questions and have a discussion about Halloween vocabulary as you read the book. See if students can predict what might be next. For fun, you can also give out a little treat/piece of candy/candy corn at the end of the book when the kids in costumes ‘see’ and want the candy.
After the story, activities are provided:
--Vocabulary: Identify or name items (pics w/ labels and pics w/out labels...you can decide if you want to use the pre-existing labels or add your own). Put cards in a bag, pile, or trick or treat bucket. Students take turns picking a card and must name or label (expressive) the pictured item. For a receptive task, put several or all pictures face-up and tell the child to point to a specific picture.
--Prepositions/Conceptual Terms: Where is the ________? Put cards in a bag, pile, or trick or treat bucket. Students take turns picking a card and must tell where the pumpkin is (behind, in front of, under, below, over, above, between, next to…)
--Following Directions: 1-3 step directions. Cut apart the cards and put in bag/bucket/pile. Students take turns picking a card and following the directions. Optional: Bonus Game Cards — Go Again, Put 1 Card Back, etc. Template/Create Your Own page provided as well…add your own directions!
--Describe the Item: Make 2 sets of cards...put one set in a bag/bucket/pile face down, put the other set of cards picture-side up—for students to use as choices/visual assistance . Students take turns picking a card from the bag and describing it. The listening partners can look at the cards (2nd set that is face up) and identify what item is being described. To make it more challenging, do not use the 2nd set/visual choices.
--Answering Basic Wh– questions from pictures: Students pick a card and answer questions (can be read to student) from the card. Create Your Own/Template page provided as well...add your own questions!
--Listing and Naming: Students pick a card from a pile/bag and must list 3-5 items from the category. Halloween categories and Non-Halloween categories are provided. Template/Create Your Own page provided as well…add your own categories!
--Answering Questions with Prepositions: A grid with pictures is provided. Wh– questions are provided. Students must look at the grid and answer the questions. This activity can be projected (for whole class participation) or printed for individual/small group use, or sent home as homework. Students can answer orally or in writing...writing paper is also provided at the end of the activity.
**Several activities have Bonus Game Cards: Go Again, Put 1 Card Back. These bonus cards can be added to games to make the activity more fun...students pick and collect cards, see who has the most cards at the end of the activity!
