This is a fall/Halloween activity. If you use the pumpkin puzzle pieces alone it can be geared towards either fall or Halloween. The worksheet is geared more towards Halloween. The pumpkin pieces can be cut in half to look like puzzle pieces so the children need to match the pieces to find the synonym or antonym. If you want to make it easier for yourself, you can just cut the pumpkins in half.
There are ten synonym pairs and ten antonym pairs. I did each of these separate with my kids. Depending on the level of your children you can make it easy and do five pumpkins, so ten words at one time. Then when they finish you can do the other five and then move onto either synonyms or antonyms. To make the activity longer when a child matches a pair you can have them form one or two sentences using either one or both of the words. You can either have them formulate the sentence verbally or write it down. Once all of the pumpkin pieces are matched they can complete the synonym and antonym worksheet to reinforce the words they just learned. Answers to the worksheet are included. To make this a fun game you can tape the pieces onto the wall so that the children need to get up and make a match. I did this with my kids and they loved it! If you laminate the pieces you can use them again and again without having the kids ruin them!
Teaching duration depends on how many children there are and if you make only one or each child form a sentence for each word. But this definitely lasts at least 30-40 minutes.
