It's Pumpkin Picking Time! This unit has been a favorite of my first graders for years!
It integrates so many great hands-on learning activities, it's hard to decide which one to start with! The best part is that they get to dig into pumpkins, observe the decay process, and learn to use the scientific method -- all while using key math, reading and writing skills!

I've included a list of recommended books for these activities:

Pumpkin Word Bank Review the words that students encounter in the non-fiction texts about pumpkins and add them to a classroom word bank. Students can use the words to refer to when writing.

I Wonder... Have your students write things they wonder about pumpkins on their “I Wonder...” sheets. Use this information to help you design your unit so you are sure you cover everything your students want to know about pumpkins.

Pumpkin Graphs Throughout the unit, have your students answer questions on bar graphs about their experiences with pumpkins. I’ve included materials that could be used in 4 pocket charts.

Pumpkin Life Cycle Activities Introduce your students to the life cycle of a pumpkin by reading books such as Pumpkin Pumpkin, From Seed to Pumpkin, or Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie. I’ve included 3 resources to choose from: Class Display of Pumpkin Life Cycle, Life Cycle Sequencing Cards and Life Cycle Plates.

How Many Seeds? Have students estimate how many seeds are in a pumpkin, then cut the pumpkin open, scoop out and dry the seeds, and have students count them. This is a great math activity with plenty of hand-on practice for counting by tens.

Pumpkin Parts! Begin to explore pumpkins from the outside in! Cut a pumpkin in half for your students and have them identify the parts. I’ve included “Pumpkin Parts Vocabulary” a full-color diagram for display. and a student worksheet.

Sensational Pumpkins! Have students describe the outsides and insides of pumpkins using their senses! In this activity, students write describing words about how pumpkins look, feel, taste, smell and sound.

Our Pumpkin Jack Carve your own classroom pumpkin, and then observe how “he” changes in the coming weeks. Have students record their observations in the observation journals.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything Retelling Retell the story with character pieces and word cue cards. Add in your own choice of musical instruments for sound effects.

All About Pumpkins Informative Writing Students recall facts they have learned from non-fiction texts about pumpkins and record the facts on the “Pumpkin Facts” sheet. Then they write a rough draft, and work with a peer or adult to edit and revise their writing. Finally, students write a final draft in a pumpkin shaped-template.

Pumpkin Picking Time! Use a large pumpkin clock to support students with telling time to the hour and half hour. While you set the time on the analog pumpkin clock, students hold up matching digital clocks.

Pumpkin Number Cards 0-120 and Missing Numbers Worksheets Have students use the number cards to practice sequencing numbers. Then have them determine the skip counting patterns and fill in missing numbers.
