Product Description
It's pumpkin time! I love teaching this informational unit after Halloween! I feel like it is easier to teach pumpkin science after jack-o-lanterns are out of the way!

Last year, I vowed to start earlier exposing my students to research, text features, and informational writing. This pumpkin themed resource will help you get started exposing your students to these concepts too. Just add your favorite informational books on pumpkins, assemble the class posters, and you are ready to begin exposing your little pumpkins to research, text features, and informational writing.

Included:
A page of pumpkin facts to get you started.

A Pumpkin Patch of Facts: Use these pages to make a class poster. Children can then use the pumpkins to write facts on and post on the class poster to share. (Black and white pumpkins are included to save on ink.)

Research Page Cover: A cover page for you to use if you wish to turn your students' work into a more published-looking project. This would be great to show at parent teacher conferences.

KWL: I like to do these before the class schema lesson to help students organize their thinking.

Pumpkin Schema Chart: I love schema charts for teaching about prior knowledge and misconceptions.

Text Feature: This is early in the year for most classes. I read an informational text that is rich in text features. As I read, I point out the different text features in the text by pinching the matching text feature on the pinch card and discussing it. When students have had enough exposure, I have them use the pinch cards, and complete the other pages.

New Facts: Students write one new fact on each stage of the life cycle to reinforce new learning.

The Most Important Stage: Children choose what they think is the most important stage of the cycle and use evidence from their research to complete the graphic organizer. Of course, all stages are equally important. After they have finished the writing, group them so each stage of the life cycle is represented. Have them share their writing. This leads to great discussion on the interdependence of the stages.

All About the Blossom: These interactive pages focus children on the blossom.

For the Love of Pumpkins: Students write their four favorite facts about pumpkins learned during the unit.

Round & Round: Children put the stages of the pumpkin life cycle in order. Under each interactive flap, they write what they think is the most important fact about each of the stages of the life cycle. This can be used as an assessment at the end of the unit or as a pre-assessment before you begin.

Pumpkin Research Recording Page: Children need a page to record their research.
