My students love this lab and talk about it for years after my course!
Part 1 of the lab allows students to determine their own genotypes and phenotypes while learning and practicing genetic terminology!
During Part 2, students combine genes with a partner to create ‘a baby’. Students will complete 32 Punnett Squares and therefore gets a lot of practice but have fun at the same time!
This lab set contains: 2 student handouts and a teacher key (a total of 14 pages)
• Student handout #1- 4 pages with an introduction to genetic terminology (genotype, phenotype, allele, dominant, recessive, homozygous, heterozygous) and pictures and descriptions of traits. Students are asked to circle or highlight their phenotypes and genotypes.
• Student handout #2- 5 page activity to be completed in partners. Student use Punnett Squares to combine their traits from handout #2 to create ‘an offspring’ and determining what it will look like. Only material needed is a coin to flip for heterozygous traits.
* Comes as both PDF and .docx files.
