The purpose of this activity is to reinforce the concepts of alleles, genes, chromosomes, genotype, phenotype, homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, heterozygous, Punnett Squares and to teach how to interpret phenotype from genotype, and to estimate genotype probabilities from phenotype by creating chromosomes based on probability and Punnett Squares and interpreting the phenotype from the alleles on chromosomes.
The students will: create a chromosome with randomly chosen alleles for two parent bunnies, by using pipe cleaners and beads; interpret the chromosome for genotype and phenotype based on dominant (solid beads) and recessive (clear beads) traits; color the bunnies according to phenotype, fill in Punnett Squares crossing the parents, determine the baby bunnies' phenotypes and genotypes according to random probabilities from the Punnett Squares; color the baby bunnies; create the chromosomes for the baby bunnies. This takes them through each activity forward and backward.
