If you teach 4th or 8th grade in Florida, you likely know about and use Patrick Smith's amazing historical novel, A Land Remembered. One of the locations discussed in the book is a long-forgotten strip of land called Punta Rassa. In fact, if you've ever driven to Sanibel Island you've been to Punta Rassa and not even known it!
This document-based collection shares the unbelievable history of Punta Rassa, which has been a pivotal location from Ponce de Leon's second voyage, to the Civil War, to the sinking of the USS Maine!
Included are two documents (one is an image of the historic marker in Punta Rassa, and the other is a newspaper article about the unveiling of the marker) and a summarizing response activity. I have students only read one article (differentiation since one article is a bit more difficult to read), but you may wish to have your students read both. Both articles provide similar information.
