Students will read The Crucible and several short stories and discover the significance of honor and integrity in the face of betrayal and injustice, the necessity for the acceptance of human frailty in all mankind, and the force of personal sacrifice for the good of the community and future generations.

Students will read The Scarlet Letter and trace the changes that occur in the characters of Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Hester Prynne, understand how each character demonstrates the consequences of guilt and sin, recognize the dominant symbols in The Scarlet Letter and understand their development, understand the Puritan moral code and its effect on the major characters, conduct a trial to determine the moral culpability of Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Hester Prynne.
