This is a full 2 week unit on primary source analysis, using documents from the Puritans . Students are given instruction on how to use primary sources to write their own research paper, a secondary source. There are 8 primary sources included in this packet: an excerpt from John Winthrop's "City upon a Hill,"John Dane "A Declaration of Remarkable Prouedenses," Anne Bradstreet's "To my Dear andLoving Husband," Edward Taylor's "Huswifery," and excerpt from Jonathan Edward's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Richard Frethorne's "Letter to his Mother and Father," and excerpt from Cotton Mather's "The Trial of Martha Carrier," and a picture "Thomas Smith, Self Portrait."
Each step of the research process is broken down, including writing a thesis, annotating sources and taking notes, writing an outline, composing a rough draft, and submitting a final copy. A video is included in how to add ICE quotations. This bundle also includes Vocabulary Lesson 4 (if you are using my previously bundled items, this will be helpful).
Students can work in groups to read and annotate the documents, or the teacher can go through them individually, which might stretch the teaching duration.
