When reading Puritan literature, it is sometimes a challenge engaging students. I use this lesson as a Bell Ringer or as an exit activity or just as a fun activity. Students love it, and they are always shocked by some of the Puritan names. This activity starts with a Quick Write Activity, and then it provides a list of 30 very interesting Puritan names. This lesson could be used with The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, "The Minister's Black Veil," "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," poetry by Anne Bradstreet, or any other Puritan literature.
*Note: A couple of the Puritan names include the words "hell" and/or "damned." However, neither is used as profanity.
