This PowerPoint is the basis of an entire lesson on the philosophy behind government. It begins with a comparison of Haiti and the Dominican Republic to illustrate the difference a government can make considering the two countries are in the same geographic location, sharing a boarder and the disparity between the two. It goes on to compare the philosophies of Locke and Hobbes using a series of illustrations and quotes. It ends by looking at the purposes of a government and relating it to the only country currently without a government, Somalia. The students are expected to take each of the purposes of government as listed by the preamble of the Constitution, and listing how the lack of government has failed Somalians in each of the categories. I use an article from the New York Times for this.
