This is a file contains a 5-step anchor chart for practicing new music with visual and written directions to follow. It should print nicely on standard size paper.
The purpose of this chart was to give my students a process for how to approach reading a new piece of music and learning music independently. I begin recorder in 3rd grade and lessons pretty much follow the steps and by 5th grade my students can independently navigate the steps they need to complete when they practice independently.
The practicing sequence I use is as follows:
1. Read, Clap, and Say the rhythm
2. Clap and Say the rhythm and pitch
3. Say the rhythm and pitches while changing finger positions
4. Air play the rhythm while changing finger positions
5. Play the song!
The result in my classroom has been a much quieter time with the recorders and my students learning their music much faster and self-assessing and redirecting their practice to a particular step.
This has made a world of difference in my classroom and hope it can be useful for you as well!
