This teaching resource offers an in-depth coverage of all the indicators for Outcome PA5.2 of the Saskatchewan curriculum –Explain the purposes of governance structures in Canada, including First Nations systems and those patterned on the Westminster parliamentary system.
Although it has been written to meet the outcome and indicators for the Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum, it will meet the needs of educators teaching about the systems of government that exist in Canada.
Lessons are presented in the order of the indicators:
a. Represent in graphic format, the structure of various levels of government in Canada, including First Nations, provincial, territorial, and federal governments
b. Investigate the structure of First Nations governments in Canada, using accurate terminology (elected chief, hereditary chief, band, band council, treaty, self-government, Assembly of First Nations)
c. Develop an understanding of the following governance bodies and the role of those in leadership positions – House of Commons, Senate, Governor general, Prime Minister, member of the federal Parliament, government Ministers
