In this project, students work in groups to write modern-day screenplay adaptations of the classic play, Pygmalion, and present scenes to the class. I have done this for many years, carefully refining it each year, and it is consistently the students' favorite activity of the year. The students spend countless hours on their own working on the scripts, often videotaping their performances to present to class in lieu of live performances.
This activity covers both writing skills and oral presentation skills and is a great way to teach students about elements of drama like stage directions. At the same time, it is a useful assessment of their understanding of the play and helps them understand the larger themes of the play at a deeper level.
