This is a 3 day intro to the Pythagorean Theorem which will help students DISCOVER (Day 1), JUSTIFY (Day 2), and PROVE (Day 3) the Pythagorean Theorem.
Day 1: Through the use of an engaging hands-on activity, students will discover the relationship between the legs of a right triangle and the hypotenuse, namely, a squared plus b squared equals c squared. By discovering the relationship themselves, students will be more excited and invested in proving why that relationship exists.
Day 2: Again, students will use a hands-on activity to give a visual justification for the Pythagorean Theorem
Day 3: Finally, students will go from showing that the Theorem works for a specific case to proving it for any right triangle with side lengths a, b, and c. The activity attached will walk students through the process of proving the Theorem Algebraically, and leaves the door open for students to discover an alternate method for proving it.
Overall, this is a hands-on, engaging mini-unit that will prepare students well for understanding and using the Pythagorean Theorem.
