Students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to a real world situation as they try to calculate how much ribbon will be required to wrap around a column.
I created this task after actually running into this problem. I needed to buy ribbon to wrap around columns for Christmas. I actually pulled out a piece of scratch paper in the store and did a little Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the amount I needed.
The task is not easy. Students are given the dimensions of the column and a basic diagram. They must figure out how to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the problem.
Answer key is included.
