Description

Hey there, computer science teachers! Looking for a fun way to spice up your 8-12th grade programming classes? Look no further! Our Python Code Hunt Cryptogram is here to save the day (and your lesson plans)!

What's the scoop?

This activity is a perfect blend of coding know-how and puzzle-solving excitement. It's like a treasure hunt, but with Python snippets as the clues!

Why your students will love it:

❤️ It's a brain-teaser that actually teaches something (sneaky, right?)

❤️ Perfect for beginners, but with enough challenge for the coding wizards

❤️ Printable PDF format (because sometimes old school is cool)

What's covered?

All the Python goodies your students need to know:

✔️ Variables and data types (the building blocks of coding)

✔️ Lists and dictionaries (because organization is key)

✔️ Loops that'll make your head spin (in a good way!)

✔️ If-else statements (for those "what if" moments)

✔️ Functions (the superheroes of coding)

✔️ String manipulation (for when your code needs to play with words)

✔️ Basic math operations (because even computers need to count)

How it works:

Students dive into Python code snippets, figure out what they do, and use the answers to crack a secret message. It's like being a code detective!

Why you'll love it:

⭐ It's a fun way to review Python basics (no snoozing in class!)

⭐ Great for checking if those coding concepts really stuck

⭐ Encourages students to think for themselves (independent learning for the win!)

⭐ If working in pairs, students get much needed practice explaining their reasoning to their partner

⭐ Sparks great discussions about writing efficient, awesome code

When to use it:

As a review of recent learning

When you want to activate student computational thinking away from the computer screen

During class for some collaborative code-cracking

What's in the box:

  • A Google Slide deck introducing the activity (optional)
  • 8 station cards with a code block and output answer choices
  • A full-page cryptogram puzzle (the main attraction) and decoder
  • Answer key (for your eyes only!)
  • Explanations for each code snippet (perfect for review or helping those who need a little extra support)
  • A hint card for each station for when students need a little nudge

Ready to turn your Python class into a code-cracking adventure? Grab this activity and watch your students transform into programming detectives! It's time to make Python more fun than a barrel of monkeys (who are also coding, obviously).

Love the concept of a stations-based activity and the ability to let them roam around the room to solve the eight different activities included in the handout. I also thought it could be a good way to "ease back in" after the Thanksgiving holiday week, using an activity based in what they have already learned so far. Unfortunately, there's an error in one of the stations and on the answer sheet key. If you follow the path and get the answers, there are too many letter T solutions (2) and not the letter needed to spell the "mystery word". Also, it may just be my group (they're obstinant at times and don't always have the best mindset for learning how to code--don't see the usefulness in it for what they perceive is their future), but matching the stations to the questions seemed to cause quite a bit of angst. Granted, they're not fond of having to think and want to be spoon fed, but...... Again, that's also the nature of my class this year.

Hello, and thank you for the detailed feedback. I really appreciate it. I have corrected the error and am currently making revisions to the activity. The new version will have hint cards per station to be used at teacher discretion and some extension and support options.

Based on your feedback and the age group, I'm considering adding some information to help students connect with and potentially motivate them to complete the activity. Still mulling over that part.

Again, thank you for taking the time to explain how it went and why. It really helps me make better products. Keep an eye out for the revised activity in the next few days. You should get an email or an inbox notification when it's posted.

And if you do the revised activity, please share that feedback! I want to know if I'm on the right track.
