My students improved from 47% to 63% proficient or advanced on the California State Test the year that I added 6 of these tests as review and reinforcement in my Algebra 2 class (2010-11). They cover ESSENTIAL SKILLS from Algebra 1. I now teach Algebra 2 and don't have data from Algebra 1. The questions on these MASTERY TESTS have been carefully designed to cover all aspects of a topic using problems of easy to medium difficulty. I require students to get at least 9 out of 10 questions correct, or they have to retest until they do. This individualizes instruction. They get a zero until they pass with at least 90% . I use them just before the chapter test. (I no longer give a mid-chapter quiz). They are quick and easy to grade, right or wrong, no partial credit. Demanding mastery emphasizes accuracy and ensures that students fully understand these concepts—no one “falls through the cracks”.
