This is my favorite project of the year! In this project students demonstrate what they know and understand about quadratic equations by launching three different projectiles and using quadratic equations to model each projectile. Students also have an opportunity to research a mathematician and learn a little history of mathematics.
The skills students will demonstrate in this assessment include:
- Writing a quadratic equation in vertex form
- Converting from vertex form to standard form
- Applying solutions of a quadratic equation to the context of a problem
- Finding the axis of symmetry
- Solving a system of quadratic equations
- Graphing quadratic equations
- Determining the domain and range of a quadratic function
In this assessment students will:
- Provide a brief history of the mathematician chosen by their group.
- Complete the lab (this packet) with all questions and self-reflection completed.
- Create a presentation of mathematician's history, their experiment, and findings in whatever form they choose.
Refer to "Craft Stick Catapults" by PBSKids for instructions on building a catapult. I've also given students the same materials from these instructions and just let them create their own catapult.
**I highly recommend giving students the materials from the PBSKids handout (I gave each group a fixed number of popsicle sticks and rubber bands - you can decide how much to give them) and letting them create their own catapult. My students said that was the highlight of the project for them. It also creates a lot of buy in.**
