This is a partner activity that allows students to work on the skill of using the quadratic formula to solve equations. This version includes problems that have exact value answers and complex numbers so I use it with my Algebra 2 class. This activity is engaging for students and provides motivation through friendly competition!
Directions: Have students work in pairs. One student will use ‘X’s as board markers, the other student will use ‘O’s. Each student chooses a problem to solve and completes the work for the problem on a separate piece of paper (Note: students must choose different problems – they should tell each other what question they are working on so they both don’t choose the same problem). Once students have an answer they need to locate the answer on the board and write their X or O in the space. If they cannot find their answer on the board, it means they have made a mistake and need to try the problem again. The first player to get 4 in a row, column, or diagonal is the winner!
