This is a matching activity I use to get students thinking about the quadratic formula and the steps needed to solve for x. Frequently I have students who are so overwhelmed with the extent of the formula, that they get lost in their steps. Allowing them to take the time to just look through the steps and organize them has strengthened their ability and confidence when solving problems on their own.
I typically copy 7-8 sets of matching cards on different colors of paper. The different colors allow for quick clean up and organization. I store the cards in little baggies from year to year.
Students work in groups to match the steps for five different problems. There is a table for them to list out the letters on each step, allowing for quick turn around in grading. Also included is an answer key.
These cards can be used when you need a little extra time for practice, after quizzes while students are waiting for everyone else to finish up, or as review before a test.
