Quadratic Equations and Projectile Motion

This 11-page product introduces students to many real world applications of quadratic functions. The problems scenarios are fun, entertaining, and humorous. Students will model falling objects such as refreshing coconuts and a brand new high school textbooks. Certain objects will have an initial upward velocity and others will not. There are hints “free of charge”, for the most part, which guide students through various problems.

One scenario includes the launch of an unidentified object from the top of a 64 ft building with an initial upward velocity of 48 ft/s. Students will not only have to figure out how high this UFO is at various times, but also figure out, using graphs and equations, when it hits the ground. Furthermore, students will be given certain clues throughout the particular scenario that will help them have fun guessing what the unidentified object actually is. My students have a blast with this part of the lesson. Hopefully your students will too!
