Product Description
This chart could be used to check for the understanding of the KEY FEATURES of the Standard Form of the quadratic function. For each of the quadratic functions provided, students will need to (after finding a, b, & c):

1. Find the vertex
2. Find the equation of the Axis of Symmetry
3. Find the y-intercept
4. Determine the direction of opening
5. Determine whether the graph has a maximum value or a minimum value.
6. Determine the "value" of the max/min
7. Specify the domain of the function
8. Specify the range of the function

This handout is provided as a PDF file as well as a Smart Notebook file to allow students come up to the board and fill in the chart. The answer key is provided. Answers may vary for some questions.

I usually ask students to spend sometimes filling this chart alone. Then, I divide the class into groups of 2-3, ask students to switch papers and grade their partner's work based on their knowledge. Students must convince each others of the correct answer and must aid each others to build a good understanding of the concepts presented.

I then ask to see if any student(s) got all of the answers correct. If so, I ask this group of students to check each others work and provide me with an answer key to the problems. Luckily, since I have a document camera, I am able to project one of their papers on the smartboard and ask students to check their work.

My students always appreciate this activity as it enhances their understanding of the standard form of the quadratic function.

This main product is one chart. However, the answer key is provided in interval notation (for the range) and using inequalities (for the range). A blank copy is associated with this handout to distribute to students. This file is designed using smart notebook file which is attached. It feels great to be able to write on the smartboard if you have one. Otherwise, the attached PDF will do the job.

If you do not have a Smartboard, you can still use this product by using Smart Notebook Interactive Viewer. This program is a free download from www.smarttech.com.

P.S. If you wish to print this file from the Smart Notebook software, I would recommend printing it using the full page option.

In this file, you'll see a "Key concept" page presented before the chart to ensure the understanding of how to find special values of the standard form.

I have added a formative assessment to this file assessing the concepts presented in this chart. This formative assessment could be used as a quiz. It is simply 2 questions with the answer key as well as a chart to calculate the results in percentage. The quiz is attached as a "Word Document" as well as a PDF file.
