### Description

Get a complete, ready-to-print unit covering topics from the Algebra 1 TEKS including graphing quadratic functions, writing equations of quadratic functions in vertex and standard form, quadratic transformations, and formulating quadratic functions using quadratic regression.

UNIT OVERVIEW:

Students are introduced to quadratic functions in this unit. They will identify key attributes of quadratic functions from graphs, including domain and range written in inequality form.

Students will formulate the equations of quadratic functions given the vertex and at least one other point in vertex form and use multiplication of polynomials to convert vertex form equations to standard form.

Students also will formulate the equations of quadratic functions from graphs that indicate the zeros of the function and at least one other point. They will then convert the factored form equations to standard form by multiplying.

Quadratic regression using technology is introduced as a method for formulating quadratic functions given at least 3 points. Situations approximating quadratic models for data are included in this lesson.

Finally, students will identify the effects of transforming the quadratic parent function y=x².

Lesson 2: Formulating Quadratic Functions in Vertex Form

Students will:

• formulate the equation of a quadratic function in vertex form and standard form given a graph that includes the vertex or given the vertex and at least one other point that lies on the graph

Lesson 3: Formulating Quadratic Functions from Roots

Students will:

• use technology to graph quadratic functions expressed algebraically in various forms
• identify attributes of quadratic functions from graphs including vertex, axis of symmetry, intercepts, and zeros
• determine the domain and range of quadratic functions from graphs

Students will:

• formulate equations of quadratic functions from multiple representations using quadratic regression with technology
• graph quadratic functions and identify attributes such as zeros and the vertex

Lesson 5: Quadratic Functions Transformations I (Translations)

Students will:

• describe the effects of translating the quadratic parent function y=x² vertically and horizontally
• shift up, down, left, and right
• graph the transformed function
• formulate the equation of the resulting function

Lesson 6: Quadratic Functions Transformations II (Stretch, Compression, Reflection)

Students will:

• describe the effects of vertically stretching and compressing the quadratic parent function y=x²
• describe the effects of horizontally stretching and compressing the quadratic parent function y=x²
• describe the effects of reflecting the quadratic parent function y=x² about the x-axis and y-axis
• graph the transformed function

Lesson 7: Quadratic Functions Transformations III (Composite)

Students will:

• describe the effects of transforming the quadratic parent function y=x², including composite transformations consisting of: reflection about the x-axis, vertical stretch and compression, horizontal stretch and compression, vertical translation, horizontal translation

EACH LESSON CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS:

• The Lesson Notes are designed for use as a note-taking guide combined with guided practice.
• Practice A and Practice B are suitable for use as in-class practice and homework. Two comparable forms are included for increased versatility.
