Instead of teaching transformation rules, let the students discover the rules as a class!
Allow students to graph the parent function x^2 by using the table and graph provided. Then assign students to 7 different groups and give them one of the 7 functions from the bold box. The groups will work together to graph their function on their calculator as well as on their paper with the parent function and fill in the table. Students will work with their group to make conjectures about what their rule is from their function. For example, group #3 should realize their new group is the same graph just moved left 2 units. Each group can present their graph and conjecture as notes for the entire class.
