Solve by graphing WITHOUT setting = 0. Novel, self-checking practice solving quadratic equations as Common Core standard REI.D.11 suggests -- graph both sides of the equation and find the x-coordinates of the intersection points.
Students just might enjoy solving 15 quadratic equations in this Encrypted Wall Activity. Play a little music as students move around the room to solve problems posted on the wall. Problems can be solved in any order (so problem sheets could easily be passed from desk to desk instead if that’s more your style). Each problem has an associated letter that students record next to the integer solutions on a specially set-up answer sheet. (Don’t worry; there are easy instructions!)
So where’s the magic? Correct solutions recorded on the student answer sheet spell out an encrypted message (an easy introduction to cryptology). Once finished, students decode to check the accuracy of their work before ever submitting for a grade.

★Common Core Standard: REI.D.11 ★
The solutions of the equation f(x)=g(x) match with the x-coordinates of the intersection points of y=f(x) and y=g(x).
What makes this product a must-have?
❶ Self-checking: Solutions spell out a message. Know at a glance if students completed the activity correctly.
❷ Quality graphs: Graphs are provided to allow students to focus on the overall process. Equations are hand-crafted to fit well in a standard view window if you would rather have students graph.
❸ Active Learning: Students move around the room in pairs to answer questions.
❹ A Common Core Standard Simplified: Common core standard REI.D.11 becomes relatively simple and accessible even for low level students.
Teacher tested; student approved.
Coming Soon! An expanded version of this activity that includes linear, polynomial, rational, absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic functions is currently in the works.
